Dear Knapp Families,
Exciting news! This summer, Knapp will once again be offering online summer learning using a tool called Edmodo with our incoming 4th, 5th & 6th grade students. Edmodo is a free and secure social learning network for educators, parents and students. It provides a safe and easy way for us to connect, share content and access assignments and school events.
As you read this letter, the “Summer Knappmodo” virtual classroom is LIVE. It has been set up to keep students connecting what they have learned during the school year while out of the physical building this summer. Before registering, here are some of the features the tool offers schools:
With a parent and/or student account, you can:
  • Send messages to your child and me, either together or individually
  • View assignments and due dates
  • Stay up to date on your child’s progress
  • Receive updates on class and school events
During the summer, Knapp staff will pose topics for students to write, locate, research and learn about each week on Monday morning. Topics might include summer reading, Khan Academy mathematics connections, writing opportunities to describe summer events and more. Whatever the topic, it will be something fun and interactive with lots of choice involved. Everything completed by the student over the summer will be shared with his or her new teacher, and will be used to get to know the student as an individual and as a learner.
Although I’m encouraging ALL students entering grades 4-6 to participate, the “Summer Knappmodo” is optional for all students and parents. The results will be tabulated and used to fuel future online collaboration and learning projects for the 2013-2014 school year. I hope you choose to provide this Knapp 2.0 opportunity for your son or daughter.
To join our classroom on Edmodo, you and your child should follow these steps:
  1. Go to www.edmodo.com
  2. Select “I’m a Student”
  3. Type your unique code: 0chlw5 in the code field, then create your unique username and password, and other information required. An email is optional.
  4. Select Sign Up. That’s all there is to it!
After you sign up for the first time, you will no longer need the code – you and your child can login using your unique username and password to login. Parents can also sign up to monitor progress throughout the summer! I look forward to connecting with students and parents on Edmodo during the summer to help keep our students applying their learning!

Sincerely,
Joe Mazza Lead Learner
